I can't say I really feel as strongly about it. I'm actually not sure there's anything really wrong with the SyncTerm web site.. One thing I actually like about that style of web page is that it's simple and loads fast, without a lot of added fluff (i.e., no ads!). I think that kind of web page helps you find what you're looking for more easily. What in particular would you change about it?

"2o24", "m0re".. Is your keybaord broken? :P
we won't have any 'young' users, or any people that can't navigate a website. that is if you dont factor in people who call bbses once and never again.

Deuce is the master of the syncterm website, so you'd need to bring it
up with him. He doesn't frequent DOVE-Net, but you can find him on irc.synchro.net (in #synchronet and other channels) and the syncterm support on sourceforge.net. --
Yes, I think that's the problem he's describing that he wants to fix..
For example, the MuffinTerm website makes it super easy - a user can download the app or open in an App Store easily. (I know thats not SyncTERM, but... for example.)
https://muffinterm.app
But I think the SyncTerm web site is fairly easy too. There are
download links for SyncTerm for Windows and MacOS toward the bottom of

*I* agree with you - its easy enough to tell non-BBS users to just click the flag and get on with standard installs, but for non-BBS users it can be a lot.
I'd love if it had all thats there now, but maybe on thru a gitlab page, or other page of the site - with the landing page that looks updated and a nice 'Download' button at top that brings non-BBS users to current MacOS/Windows/Linux executables. (If available)

KK - I've reached out to him before about compile stuff and will do again. Again, its no biggy to ME - but for new users a landing page w/ a quick and easy 'Download' button that displays installable executables might help them understand easier.
I'm thankful for all the info and different releases on the page - but I live in the terminal, too. :P

I think it would go a long way to help foster new users to our wonderful community.

The site is hideous, but I think Deuce likes it that way.
The gigantic waving flag was an "enhancement" following frequent complaints that people couldn't find the download link. They still have trouble locating it. I don't even recognize it as a download link until I stop being

I had another look, and on 2nd thought, I think the page probably could be improved. Above the download links at the bottom, it says "the below links are almost certainly not what you want". The 'actual' download link is more toward the middle (under the flag), and there's also another link that says "or here". The page probably could be simplified a bit. And the color scheme could be better, I think.

you both are understanding me wrong.
We dont have users.
And the people that are too dumb to download syncterm when dude has tons of links on the site wouldn't be good users that would stick around.

there are still BBSs that get callers.
I have a few users too, some that call every single day. Rock on.
I also see you and the people you hang out with get offended when i mention things arent that active anymore. Hey, it's not your fault. people have moved on.
Too bad you werent around when it was actually active.
? I went away in 97 until 2017 - adulting, and all.

I actually have a few. The majority are older than I am, though.
MRO wrote "we" dont' have users, when he should have written "I" don't
have users. That's because he has a crap board not even accessible to
the public, and doesn't really know how to actually run a good one. He

He can't seem to realize that although it isn't like it was 25 years

I've had some regulars too (and sometimes they come and go), and at least some of them, I'm pretty sure aren't sysops of other BBSes.
Similar time-frames, my friend! I consider my "active" years to be 1992-1996.
I really dig the way you've been able to attract/educate a whole new crop
of folks to BBSing with your outreach, welcome and patient explanations.
My favorite thing is when people return to BBSing, while they often
express surprise it still exists, they are so glad it does.
I agree -- the syncterm site could use a little modernization, and
it's a geat program. I'll also point more tech-savvy folks to IcyTerm, MagiTerm and Netrunner (I know you do, too)!

you should just tell them to use htmlterm because then they dont need
to dick around with a client.
Why are you hiding yours? Because it's completely stock and boring? <CHORTLE>
Yes, that's good. I'm very sure many of my users are not sysops,
although some are.
MRO is somewhat detached from reality. ;-)

Yeah, HTML/wss definitely the path of least resistance for new folks. Easiest way to get them in.
I guess BBSing will continue to be a niche thing, and there is definitely less activity than when I returned a while back. It seems to spike every
now and then, but it's always pretty low. I'm grateful for the people who *are* here, and stick around :)

yeah you dont know shit about me, you havent ran a system as long as i

about my bbs and me is incorrect. furthermore, i run multiple bbses
which you still can't wrap your empty head around.
Similar time-frames, my friend! I consider my "active" years to be 1992-1996.
like around the mid 90s there was a lot of activity that a lot of people call 'the third wave'
we also had a rush of activity in the early 2000's but it wasn't as big
as the third wave.
I really dig the way you've been able to attract/educate a whole new cr of folks to BBSing with your outreach, welcome and patient explanations
dude you really have no idea how much money i've spent out of pocket on promoting bbsing and just staying up until 3am when i wake up at 6am helping people. i did that for a very long time.
My favorite thing is when people return to BBSing, while they often express surprise it still exists, they are so glad it does.
when they come back they check it out but those people go away and don't come back. i tried to bring back people from the huge bbses and they
have moved on. people prefer social media.

you're another guy that has not been around long enough to say anything about anything. and you don't know me. you are also another guy i took out of my block list but you're going back.
but does everyone here see what i mean?
I say we don't have users (which is a fact) and these delusional people take it personally and attack me. happens every time.

yeah i have a few too. i dont really consider that normal capacity.
a few years back we got hit with a big slump and it hasn't bounced back.
there's a lot of people in denial about that or just don't have a good enough rspective because they haven't been around a long time.
There are a few boards that do get a lot of traffic, although not full capacity and maybe mostly other sysops. Maybe they are more l33t than most of us. :D More power to them, though. Whatever is working for them, I wouldn't discourage.

Yeah, in the past few years there was discussion of one in Taiwan that is very active, and about the software that powers it. I was curious so I tried to check it out but it is very much all in Chinese. ;)
Back in the day, a network I was on (GT Power) had several nodes in Taiwan, but they also mostly participated amongst themselves. The only time you really realized they were around was when some of the users would post in the equivalent of the FIDO Asia Link echo.
